Chinese 101 and 102 have been the best and most rewarding classes I have taken at UVa. I have learned much not only about the Chinese language but also about the Chinese culture. Since I never learned Chinese from my parents, I absolutely enjoyed the opportunity to learn Chinese. I have learned so much in these two introductory classes due to the dedicated and hard work of Tseng Laoshi. Tseng Laoshi is a wonderful teacher, and she clearly presents the material in each chapter in an orderly manner, which greatly facilitates the learning process. On Mondays and Tuesdays, we learn new vocabulary and grammar structures. On Wednesdays, we have a TA, who helps us with pronunciation and grammar structures. On Thursdays, we have to create and present dialogues in Chinese. These opportunities to create our own oral performances not only increase my understanding of the language, but they also allow me to interact with my other classmates. Finally, on Fridays, we take a weekly quiz that tests our knowledge of the chapter from that week. I feel Tseng Laoshi's order in presenting the material and testing us on the material is extremely effective in allowing us to learn the Chinese language. While I often thought that the required two hours of lab work was excessive, I have realized that that lab has allowed me to greatly improve my pronunciation since the tones in the language can sometimes be tricky to learn.
