I first entered Chinese 101 with feelings of deep reservation. I really wasn't sure what to expect. I was anxious about the difficulty of the Chinese language. I soon learned that most of the other students were filled with the same apprehension that I was. However, I found that most of my anxieties and apprehensions were misplaced. I found Chinese to be a most interesting language. There is a lot of history behind the characters and it is fun and challenging to be able to learn about the etymology behind the words. Although the characters look intimidating, the course is designed to go slow, give plenty of practice, and allow the students plenty of time to learn the characters. I also found the different tone marks to be very interesting. It was intriguing to learn that I could pronounce the same word four different ways and it would have four different meanings. The course is designed to give students plenty of practice with the tones. Students are allowed time in the language lab, they get to practice with a pronunciation tutor, and there is plenty of practice in the classroom as well. In addition to this, the most exciting part of Chinese class was the instructor. Professor Tseng came to class excited to teach and interact with her students. She brings excitement to the classroom and really spraks the students; interest. She never fails to tell her studnets how pleased she is and how excited she enjoys teaching. Chinese class was a great experience and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole year.
