When I decided to enroll in Chinese 101 as a fourth year, I was unsure as to whether there was much for me to gain from class, as I would only be studying the language for a year. After completing this year of Chinese, I can honestly say that I am glad for having taken this class. It was a fun year. It all starts with the teacher, Tseng Laoshi, whose eagerness in teaching rubbed off on the students, as daily classes were always fun and filled with conversation. As a result, I was able to meet unique classmates that I otherwise may not have been able to. Classes were invaluable in what we learned about not only the Chinese, but also the culture as well. Although this course does demand a high degree of effort and commitment, the assignments were usually interesting and fun to do. The weekly oral presentations, while difficult at first, definitely allowed me to improve on my pronuncation skills. Although I will be unable to continue studying Chinese at the University of Virginia, I think that I have established a solid background in the language that I can build on in the future. |
