First year Chinese was quite an experience. I feel that I got more out of my time spent in Chinese 101 and 102 than in any of my other classes this year, as the class was structured quite effectively and our professor (Tseng Laoshi) was effective and enthusiastic. I am surprised by the amount we were able to learn in only two semesters time, and also at how little work it took to learn so much. I have taken other language classes at UVA and elsewhere, and the program for Chin 101 and 102 was better than any other that I have taken. It was also fun getting to know other people in class, and it seems that people in first year Chinese tended to try to get to know each other better than any other class I have had at UVA. Part of this is the fact that most of the students are first years, but much of it is due to Tseng Laoshi¡¦s small and heart-warming classroom environment. Tseng Laoshi is the most dedicated of all of the professors I have had at UVA, in terms of dedication to her students and to learning the material at hand. Looking back it has been quite a good experience, and I would recommend anyone who is willing to devote a little time to a language each week to take the class.
