Although Chinese class was difficult and at times frustrating, it was well worth my time. I believe I have learned a great deal in the past two semesters. The classes were slightly larger than would have been ideal, but they were still among the smallest of any I have taken at UVA. Both Tseng laoshi and Denzin helped to ease this problem by emphasizing individual participation. Also, I found the weekly pronounciation tutorials to be very helpful. Because of the uniqueness of the language, I considered it to be much more interesting than Spanish, which I have also studied at UVA. While the lectures in my other classes tended to ecome tedious as the semester wore on, Chinese class did not. My study of Chinese has increased my desire to learn about the people and culture of China. I was not able to travel to Shanghai this summer, but I hope to travel to China on my own at some point in the future.
