INTRODUCTION

Chinese 101 has been one of the most challenging and demanding classes
in my curriculum here at the University. This class was a new experience
for me since I am a Computer Science major in the Engineering School.
Small classes and in-depth discussions were not the typical environments
I was comfortable with. By far the most difficult part for me, I believe,
was meeting the requirement to attend class each day of the week. My main
reason for taking this class was not to fulfill some language requirement
that many of the College students have to complete, but my desire to
understand Chinese so that I may converse with my roommate and many of my
Chinese friends.

The first day I attended class, Tseng laoshi appeared to be very frightening
and a bit intimidating. I suppose that was intended to scare off the people
who were not really interested in learning the language or people who would
waste her time and effort to teach them. Despite being scared and a bit
worried about the difficulty of the class, I decided to remain and see what
doors could be opened for me. As the initial studies went by, I realized
that Tseng laoshi was a very talented teacher who was really motivated and
earnest in teaching Chinese to her students. As the weeks went by, she
taught us many new aspects of the language skillfully and efficiently. With
the assigned homework and the required lab session, I was given plenty of
time to exercise and review the Chinese material so that I would do well in
class. Now, as I write this reflection, I realize that I have learned more
than the basics of Chinese language; I have gained a deeper understanding of
exploring the many new opportunities at the University. Unfortunately, I will
not be able to continue in this class due to the requirements for my major
next semester. However, I must say that this class has been my most unique
experience so far.

My Most Excellent Work

1.	Lesson 2- Family
2.	Lesson 3- Dates and Time
3.	Lesson 4- Hobbies

Like many of my other classmates, the criteria for my most excellent work was
based on the highest marks I received for the passages I wrote. In my first
passage, for Lesson 2, I explored the use of family members and professions to
provide a description of two families through only pictures. At the end, I also
provided a twist to bring a bit of humor to a somewhat boring passage. My second
passage, for Lesson 3, talks about a young man taking a girl out for dinner. The
ironic part of this passage is that the woman already has a boyfriend who is
quite the senior citizen. In my third passage, on Lesson 4, I explored the
boundless devotion a guy can offer to a woman, may it be watching a chick flick
or suffering through hours of French movies.
