INTRODUCTION Learning the Chinese language with no previous experience in a character-based system has been challenging. I assumed that memorizing and remembering characters would be the most difficult aspect of the class. After a few weeks, however, I realized that pronunciation and the syntax of the language were definitely harder for me to grasp. Quickly learning characters ended up being my strong point in the class. Overall, I would have to say that I learned more in 14 weeks under Tseng laoshi’s tutelage than I would ever have imagined possible. My pronunciation of the four tones and understanding of grammar has improved but still needs work. I would advise against taking this class unless you are serious about wanting to learn the Chinese language. If learning Chinese is something you take seriously then this is the class for you. Both Tseng laoshi and her teaching assistant Deirdra Wu are friendly and sociable, and dedicated to making the class as fulfilling as possible. My Most Excellent Work 1. Lesson 6- Making Appointments 2. Lesson 7- Studying Chinese 3. Lesson 8- School Life The three passages I have chosen are ranked based upon how interesting they are as well as how well they were written. Lesson 6’s dialogue definitely seemed the most realistic of all the dialogues I have written. It is a typical conversation between friends who are deciding what to do on a Friday night. Lesson 7’s dialogue is not very interesting but is relatively well written, describing a telephone conversation between friends in the midst of studying Chinese. The narrative on Lesson 8 describes a typical day in my life as a student. It is well written and somewhat accurately describes my average day around campus. My language partner and I tried to create amusing dialogues using the new vocabulary and grammar we learned in that lesson. We actually got a few laughs out of the class when reciting certain dialogues.
