INTRODUCTION From not being able to understand anything in Chinese at all, I am amazed at how much Chinese 101 has taught me within three months. Although learning Chinese requires a lot of time and effort, Tseng laoshi makes what is difficult become easy and what it frustrating become fun for all her students. Knowing that I can learn a new language in a short period of time is such a rewarding feeling and that makes all the hard work I have put in to this class very worth doing. By far, Chinese 101 has been one of my favorite classes I have taken at the University and I highly encourage you all to join this wonderful learning experience. My Most Excellent Work 1. Lesson 8- School Life 2. Lesson 6- Making Appointments 3. Lesson 3- Dates and Time Spending many late nights writing Chinese characters and practicing how to pronounce pinyin correctly makes all eight passages I wrote for this class have special meanings to me. Here, I have chosen three of the passages that tell the most about me and also show some of the important grammar structures we have learned. The passage from Lesson 8 is my first diary written in Chinese. It captures what my daily routines are usually like at UVa. and how busy college life can get. This diary gives me good motivations to continue studying Chinese so that in the future I can really start writing a diary in Chinese on a regular basis. Since currently the use of a phone call to make and appointment is essential, I find the passage from Lesson 6 to be very useful. It also provides a guideline of how we can ask people for a favor in a polite way. I think the passage from Lesson 3 is also very useful because it shows a way to find out when your friend’s birthday is and how to invite friends to celebrate their special days.
