INTRODUCTION I have always wanted to be able to understand my mother and my relatives when they speak Chinese. Since taking Chinese 101, I would like to thing that Tseng laoshi has helped me at least start to fulfill this desire. I have probably worked the hardest in Chinese 101 out of all the college classes I have taken this semester. Chinese is incredibly time consuming, but I think that the time I have put in to the class has been very rewarding. Through learning Chinese, I feel a new bond being created between my mother and me. I feel a new sense of pride when I see Chinese characters, which previously looked like chicken scratch, and they resemble words to me. I love how my suitemates now walk around saying "Ni hao" and "Wo shi Meiguoren" after hearing me say it over and over again the first week of class. My Chinese 101 class has been challenging, but with Tseng laoshi’s extra enthusiasm, it is almost fun to go to class everyday. I would recommend taking this class to anyone who is interested in trying something new and interesting. It is a nice change after four years of Spanish, and it is cool to be able to take advantage of a class not taught in my high school. I’d like to thank Tseng laoshi and our TA Deirdra for all of the help they have given me this semester. My Most Excellent Work: 1. Lesson 1- Greetings 2. Lesson 7- Studying Chinese 3. Lesson 8- School Life I like Lesson 1 because I really studied that chapter and actually can recall all of the words and characters in it. I suppose it is because we studied it the longest and I was so excited to be learning some Chinese. My partner and I had fun creating the dialogue. Lesson 7 was great because I was able to use a lot of the Chinese I had learned in previous chapters to describe my daily life. I got to ask my partner her usual routine, and it was useful to practice the words we would most commonly use to describe daily activity. Lesson 8 was fun because I was once again talking about things that I really do during the day, like g to Chinese class. I was able to be honest with the class and with Tseng laoshi and was able to admit that I spoke and wrote Chinese slowly. I also want to mention that I am making some progress and I hope to continue improving as I enter the next semester and Chinese 102.
