INTRODUCTION

I have learned to read, write, and speak Chinese at the introductory level.  The 
fast-paced lesson plan of the textbook and teacher motivated me to practice my Chinese 
every day.  I diligently wrote Chinese characters so that I could convert them to my 
memory.  I studied the new words and carefully read the dialogues aloud each week.  
In the language lab, I improved my speaking skills by making tape recordings.  I also 
improved my listening comprehension by adjusting my ears to natively spoken Mandarin.  
It was wonderful to be part of a class that as a collective whole was intent on 
learning Chinese.  The teacher demonstrated a masterful knowledge of Chinese and an 
overwhelming desire to make our experience fun and rewarding.  I feel that this class 
was one of the most enjoyable and practical classes I have ever taken.  I believe my 
future endeavors in Chinese will be wise.

My Most Excellent Work: 1) Dating  2) Birthday Party  3) Travel

I chose Dating as my first preference because of its length, complexity of grammar 
such as descriptive complements and vocabulary content.  I chose Birthday Party because 
it involves a happy event, and includes various grammar structures such as action in 
progress and past events.  Lastly, I chose Travel because of its usefulness in the real 
world, the involvement of money and bargaining and comparative structures.
