INTRODUCTION

Looking back at my year of study of Mandarin Chinese, I can only stand back in awe. The
Chinese language is by no means easy, but I embarked upon my study with exactly this in
my mind. Mastering tones and character proportions is not easy (and believe me, I still
have a long way to go). I am quite happy with my overall performance. My hours of study
have not all been in vain, as I have seen real progress since the first timid day of class.
The Chinese language is really quite beautiful, both written and spoken, and Chinese
culture is one of the richest and most ancient cultures on earth. Chinese language has,
in the course of my two years at the University, been my favorite class.

My Most Excellent Work: 1) Dating 2) Travel 3) Seeing a Doctor

Dating was by far my favorite. I felt that our subject matter was good (boy meets girl,
boy falls for girl, girl doesn’t like boy). I liked Travel because I felt that the dialogue
was true to life. Keith and I talked about our real summer plans, and it felt good to be
able to do that in Chinese. Finally, Seeing a Doctor was important because I felt that the
content was sufficiently complex and interesting (and I did relatively well on it).
