INTRODUCTION

Learning Chinese has been a very challenging and fun experience, and I am confident that my
life will be richer for it. I wanted to study because knowledge of it will be very helpful
for the research interests I have in Tibet. Nonetheless, I was apprehensive to study a
character-based language because I thought it would require an excessive amount of study
to simply be able to read simple signs and texts. The truth is that Chinese is a lot of
work, but the instruction here at the University is exceptional, and thus it doesn't seem
that difficult. The integrated approach of the textbooks is brilliant and our teacher,
Tseng Laoshi, is a very engaging and knowledgeable teacher. With the combined help of the
materials and the teacher's instruction, all students in the class have learned to read and
write many, many characters. Moreover, we can speak and understand conversations about a
wide variety of topics in Chinese. I now have the dedication to persevere in Chinese because
of the great experiences I can have even here in America with my new abilities with this
language.

My Most Excellent Work: 1) Renting an Apartment 2) Seeing a Doctor 3) Midterm

I chose “Renting an Apartment” because the content of the dialogue is very useful. The
content of “Seeing a Doctor” was very useful as well, and the original version of it had very
few mistakes. I chose the midterm monologue as my third favorite work from the semester. I
like it because it is something I wrote and performed myself. Because I received help from
Tseng Laoshi when writing it, the content and grammar of the passage are pretty good.
