INTRODUCTION

I decided to study Chinese language in fulfillment of my foreign language requirement
because of my past experience of traveling in China, my interest in Chinese politics,
and the important place of China in world politics today. Being a Foreign Affairs major,
it was a natural choice. I have enjoyed the language, and do not regret my choice.
However, Chinese is also not an easy language to learn no language is, I’m sure but
Chinese presents unique difficulties. Mastering Chinese is very rewarding, but to do so
requires hard work and much time. Too often I personally failed to invest enough time
into my studies to do this. I would recommend Chinese to prospective students, with the
cautionary note that it takes dedication, and may not be the best choice for those who
are double majoring or otherwise have heavily-loaded course schedules.

My Most Excellent Work:

I selected the following three pieces for two reasons. First, I wrote them all by myself,
which I am proud of. Secondly, because I wrote them myself, two of them directly relate
to my real-life experiences.
