INTRODUCTION

Studying Chinese was initially far more difficult than I anticipated.  I devoted a 
considerable amount of time during my first semester of study to learning how to study 
the language.  It exceeded any other class of mine in its difficulty and workload, but 
yielded very tangible results and progress.  I am very proud of the level of knowledge I 
have achieved in Chinese.  The small class size and intensive weekly schedule has 
contributed to my progress.  I realize that one’s achievements are directly related to 
the goals that one sets.  There are people who strive for total fluency, and their 
efforts are directed towards that goal.  I have sought a working understanding of the 
language and the ability to learn it independently.  I feel that I am close to achieving 
my goals.

My Most Excellent Work: 1) Midterm  2) Birthday Party  3) Dating

The midterm narrative represented a great deal more care and time than any other oral 
piece.  For this reason, its quality was considerably higher than the usual assignment.  
Birthday Party used a large number of new phrases and grammatical structures.  Dating
was also complex in its grammar and had a very fluid structure.
